'I was 24 years old and bought an investment property.' 

After finishing university, Nicole did what many graduates do; she travelled overseas. Shortly after returning home, at just 24 years of age, she bought a Defence Housing Australia (DHA) investment property.

'I was only on a graduate wage, so I knew I couldn't afford to buy anything to live in. To help me make the mortgage payments, I needed income from an investment property.'

Two years prior, Nicole's dad and older sister Janelle bought two DHA properties. Seeing how things had worked so well for them, Nicole wanted to be part of the action.

'It was a big step, but at the same time, I knew how easy it had been for Janelle and Dad.

'My friends were amazed I could afford it at my age, but I explained it was because of the rental income and tax benefits.

'The whole process was pretty easy. Once I chose the property and settled the contract, I didn't have to worry...it has pretty much looked after itself.'

Recently married, Nicole now lives in London with her husband Scott, and has comfort knowing her investment is in safe hands.

As both a DHA investor and property analyst, Nicole recommends DHA to others, especially young or first time investors.

'I believe it's a really safe investment, especially for people with little investment experience. DHA's lease terms and guaranteed income provide extra security and that's really important in the current financial climate.

'The additional security is also what the banks are looking for; lenders are going to be analysing mortgage approvals more carefully.'

Nicole is confident her DHA investment will set them up for the future.

'When we want to buy a place to live in, we'll sell the property and use the money as a deposit or use the equity to finance other investments.'
